Linguistic stereotype and the semantic structure of a sentence: syntactic means of identifying a stereotype
Abstract
The article examines how a linguistic stereotype is revealed through certain semantic structures. The analysis shows that some syntactic structures convey non-at-issue content, which reveals a stereotypical proposition. The use of such structures in certain contexts allows us to identify stereotypes that can be described within the modal framework: ‘Typical S is P’ and ‘Typical S(1) is not P’. Stereotypes following the first schema appear in result constructions (‘S1 belongs to S, therefore it is P’) and causal constructions (‘S1 is P because it belongs to S’). Stereotypes following the second schema can be identified by contrasting constructions (‘S1 belongs to S but it is P’) and quasi-comparative constructions (‘Even S1 (which belongs to S) is P’ / ‘S1, for an S, is P’).
